The scenes shot at Slab City and Salvation Mountain are pretty accurate. Slab City is just a short distance from the painted mountain and that gray haired guy in the movie is the actual guy that did all of that although that area is a little messier than is depicted in the movie. It's 1,000's of gallons of latex paint.

It's just south of Niland, on the east side of the Salton Sea.
