It's been a little while since I have used the CTC-38's, need to get them back into service. I have two 22" table models plus a console and, at my parents' house I have a CTC-39.
It seems like the performance of the 38 and 31 are pretty similar. Some of my examples I think have somewhat weak CRT's so I may not be getting the best from them.
The CTC-39 really seems to work the best of all of them but it is a school model which had very little use plus a black-matrix CRT.
As far as I know the HV/horizontal output circuits are almost the same on the CTC 31, 38 and 39...the 38 and 39 have transistorized IF and a different chroma circuit.
The later CTC-38/39 seemed to use zener diodes or something in the 6BK4 circuit although I seem to remember one of the 38's having an adjustable HV control.
