When I was a teenager in the mid '90's needing to make money to buy a car, I mowed lawns in the summer. I had one customer who was elderly and almost completely blind. She had a late '60's Motorola that she would use just to listen to the audio, It's hard to say how long it had the vertical collapsed, but a very dark line was burned into that CRT. She had no idea it was a problem because she couldn't see the screen anyway.
