New Mel Gibson movie
 

This thread is only about the movie and hopefully will not degenerate into any political issues (if that's possible when discussing Mel Gibson.)

I came across a review of Mel's new film, Apocalypto. An unfinalized version was shown at the Fantastic Fest. It was made in Mexico with a cast of locals and unknown actors. It's about Mayan civilization just before Columbus, which is apparently a metaphor for our society, that, I suppose, Mel believes is also in decline. (I disagree.)

The review is highly complimentary, overall. Calls the movie a "towering achievement." Though it does mention the film has some scenes of intense and gruesome violence, i.e., human sacrifice, that is described in terms like nasty and sadistic. I personally do not find this entertaining, especially if it's excessive and out of context to the story. I think to draw parallels between an ancient and a modern society is an intriguing premise for a movie, but I think he can make his point without making it a gorefest. The man has talent as a filmaker, but he just seems to have some whacked out ideas.

I just thought it was an interesting review. I think the final version will be released in December.

I think the name of the film would be great for a winter tire; the Goodyear Apocalypto or some such.

Are you sure he wasn't trying to do a remake of Cannibal Holocaust?
