Very Odd 40's RCA Projection set on eBay
 

No doubt this is rare! It'll be interesting to see if he gets his price.

Somebody wants the set bad! OUCH! Too bad the bidders are secret. Hope somebody admits that they got the set. Too bad it is in California.

Really neat looking set. It looks kinda like one I saw in a three stooges short. I can't remember the name of the flick. i just remember thet they were plumbers working at a rich estate. Just as the hostest was going to show her friends a live picture of niagra falls on her television set, water came shooting out of the screen like a fire hose!

Appropriately this set is called the "Cube on Cube" Model CL-2 Clubman, it was announced Feb 1948, and sold for $1400.

There were 3 other models in the Clubman series; CL-1 "Steel Rack Mounted" for custom installations, CL-3 "Folding Door" and CL-5 "Early American"

The name of that short is "A Plumbing We Will Go." Considered one of their best. I have it on DVD.

I've always wondered about the projection CRTs. Did they have to be brighter thus having shorter lifespans? I've always wondered.

The HV to the CRT was controlled by a relay that would close once the sweep sections were warmed up so as not to burn a spot or a line on the CRT face, which could--no--would otherwise happen very quickly. A vintage 5" projection CRT is indeed blindingly bright and operates at about 25,000 volts on the anode to get it that way.

Does anyone have an opinion of the CL-2's provenance/collectability/desirability as compared to the era's consumer projection sets (RCA and others) or, if located, the 3 other models in the Clubman series; CL-1 "Steel Rack Mounted" for custom installations, CL-3 "Folding Door" and CL-5 "Early American"?
