Have you tried looking for a good used 27" CRT? The 27" Sonys from the late 90's seem to fail long before the CRT gets weak. I once used on in an 80's set and it worked very well.

The set it goes in is a KV27XBR10 built Dec 1989
The tube is an A68 something something, I'll have to pull the back to be sure.

I think just about any 27" CRT will work in that except for the fake trinitrons of the mid 90's. Sony made a bunch of CRTs that used a regular in-line gun instead of the single lens trinitron gun. Obviously, the yoke and pinout would be completely different on those. You will probably have to set the H Stat control all the way to one extreme to get a recent CRT to converge because their newer CRTs are designed to have that pin grounded instead of adjustable.

i changed a bunch for a local company and since they had no dud value i busted off the neck of one for study.
gun looks identical to the crap zenith guns.
these tubes go in the ohio e check monitors.
within a year they look like hell again.

The seller dropped the price of that 12" to $15. Now it's not such a bad deal.

why did Sony use "fake" CRT's in the mid 90's? I don't think they use a true Trinitron tube now, which I don't understand because that tube was such a "step above" what everyone else was doing. Just curious.

From what I've seen repairng many Sony TVs and monitors, they've made a number of changes to their CRTs.

For TVs, they started making some models with a CRT that had a regular in-line gun. They seemed to do this for a few years in the mid 90's on their "V" line of TVs. They may have used them on other TVs, but I haven't seen any. Fortunately, they seem to have abandoned this on more recent TVs. All the flat screen Wega sets I've seen had sinlge lens trinitron guns.

In computer monitors, they stopped using the single lens gun in about 1997. They replaced it with a complex in-line gun which they still use today on their monitors. These guns have extremely good focus compared to their older monitors, but that may just be from other improvements. I've seen a lot of weird failures in these CRTs (mostly major focus and convergence shifts). I think it's caused my a resistor network that's built into the neck of the CRT.
