South Korea's Samsung develops world's largest organic LED panel

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korea (news - web sites)'s Samsung Electronics has developed the world's largest organic light emitting diode (OLED) display panel for high-definition televisions.

The 21-inch (53.34-centimeter) OLED panel outperforms existing liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in brightness, slimness and power efficiency, the firm said.

Organic LED screens generate their own light, eliminating the need for back lighting and allowing equipment makers to develop slimmer and more power efficient monitors.

Samsung said its new portable display would be used for televisions and computer monitors.

Samsung, one of the world's largest LCD makers, said its new OLED display panel, an upgrade on its own 15-inch product, uses technology that can be easily mass-produced on the company's existing LCD production lines.

"With the development of the world's largest OLED, Samsung has achieved a technological advantage and is positioned well to be a leader in the market for large-sized OLEDs for TVs," said Jun-Hyung Souk, senior vice president of the LCD research and development center.

Samsung said the OLED display features resolution of 6.22 million pixels and uses active matrix-based (AM) technology for low power consumption and high-resolution.

The global market for organic LEDs is forecast to grow to 830 million dollars this year from 330 million dollars last year.

Diamond Dust May Make Televisions Thin

Midas, TV trivia fans will remember, stole the world's finest diamonds, ground them into dust and melted the sparkling powder into a special elixir that allowed him to move at nearly the speed of light -- and speed is a thief's best friend.

Now, a hundred years later (40 years in television time), British researchers say diamond dust could make bulky TV screens as much a thing of the past as the golden oldies they used to broadcast.

The new diamond dust display technology "opens up the possibility of cheaper and more power-efficient flat-panel displays for use in wide-screen digital TVs and many other applications," said University of Bristol spokesperson Lacia Ashman.

Tiny Shiny Technology

In 1998, three Bell Labs researchers led by W. Zhu showed that dust-sized diamonds will emit electrons at a lower voltage than any other substance. Many visual displays use so-called "electron field emission," and an ultra low-voltage display made from diamond dust could make displays possible in an enormous variety of sizes, shapes and applications.

Research with diamond dust -- otherwise known as "nano-diamonds" -- "has allowed us to reach a position where the technology is now ripe for exploitation," said University of Bristol chemist and project leader Neil Fox.

"Exploitation" of the diamond-dust technology means the ability to make flat panel displays hundreds of dollars cheaper than they are today. Expense is one reason the bulky TV screen has not yet been cancelled like an old TV show.

U.S.-based Advance Nanotech is helping exploit the tiny shiny technology in a trans-Atlantic alliance designed to leverage Bristol's expertise in small scale structures and materials, Fox explained.

"Today, in collaboration with the University of Bristol, we commence the development of revolutionary new displays for consumer and business markets. The funding we have provided will bridge the gap between first-class innovation and marketable solutions for these high-value markets," said Advance Nanotech CEO Magnus Gittins.

"This collaboration will also enable scientists to combine diamond nano-particles with other powerful nano-technologies and could lead to the next generation of products in the home and the workplace," Ashman added.

Stardust Memories

When they get excited, diamonds can really shine.

Every true romantic knows how brilliant stardust memories can be, and nano-diamonds are a famously exotic form of stardust. Astro-geologists have noted that diamond dust is an abundantly recovered material from meteorites that shower Earth with the sparkling grains as they re-enter the ultra-hot atmosphere.

Diamond dust also has some unique properties technology researchers may be able to use.

Laser-excited diamonds deliver single photons when they fluoresce. Dilute impurities -- nitrogen and small holes made by missing carbon atoms -- create an optically active nitrogen vacancy, or "NV center," that can emit one photon at a time.

Scientists may be able to harness this unusual fluorescent behavior for use in screens and flat-panel displays that have a particularly pure and clear image.

Flat panel display sales are up this year, which may one day mean that diamonds -- not gold -- bring the Midas touch to tomorrow's high-tech entrepreneurs.
