Ceramic/Mylar cap replacements

Hi,

I had a general question about equivalent ceramic and mylar capacitors. There's a chance I may have a bad mylar cap in my Sony set and I'm having a difficult time sourcing the exact part number (which the service manual stresses is vital for this part). Its marked as a .01uF 10% 200V. I am able to find lower capacitances with the same tolerance and voltage rating. Is there any concern with replacing this with smaller caps in parallel to achieve the same overall capacitance so long as the voltage and tolerance ratings are the same?

It's possible the issue is not the mylar cap at all. I haven't tested it out of circuit yet. I'm just trying determine a course of action should it be a bad part.

Thanks!

one would think you can use this cap with no problem.

It's ok to put 2 half capacitance same voltage caps in parallel to make an unavailable value.

Personally I'd look for the same type of cap, but I would widen my search to 1% to 10% tolerance (a cap that is within a 5% tolerance is definitely within a 10% tolerance). I'd also be open to any voltage rating between 200V and 1000V.
Voltage rating of a capacitor is basically the maximum voltage you can continuously apply across the part without destroying it... A cap that's harder to ruin shouldn't be a problem... The only exception to that is electrolytic caps which usually want at least 50% of their rated voltage to last their rated life.

Thanks for the replies. I'll broaden my search to look for tighter tolerances and higher voltages.
