CTC-5 IF alignment, chassis in or out?

Hello, after a full recap and convergence adjustment, I feel my CTC5 is need of a sound and video alignment as I am having issues with the best sound and the best picture not happening at the same time, nor am I getting very successful color AFC results as per SAMS procedure.

The manuals say to disable the horizontal by removing the fuse, and adding a load to the B+. Certain other steps allude to performing the IF alignments to a chassis on a bench top, out of the TV, no yolk connected etc.For this model, is this correct? Any experienced folk have any particular tips or quirks on this model? I’m have a Leader LSW-333 and a Sencore SM-152 sweep
Generators and have built the detector probe as per the manual as well as a decent oscilloscope.

I aligned mine with the procedure you summarized - horizontal disabled and B+ loaded with a hefty power resistor.

I don't know the full reasons for doing this, if doing it with everything running actually makes a difference in the results or just causes a lot of interference in the scope, etc.

One warning: I found the length of the leads on the IF signal injection point was very touchy when aligning the IF.

Do you have the Deluxe or Super chassis?

The Super (which I have) is touchy for sound and sound traps alignment, as there is only one 4.5 MHz sound IF stage, and if you get all the traps set precisely to 4.5 Mhz, you may get the sound dropping out at the nominal fine-tuning point, and need to detune one of the traps slightly. If you have the Super chassis, this could be contributing to your current problem of sound and picture not both being optimum at some point in the fine tuning adjustment.

Thanks, this is good information. I’ll be working with the Super chassis as well so I’ll be aware of the 4.5Mhz trap adjustment.

Was your chassis removed from the cabinet when you did the alignment?
