Volvo Meltdown at McDonalds

I don't understand how these things happen. Seems to me this shouldn't happen with a modern late model car.

Lookupaplate.com indicates it's a 2011 model. The township where this occurred (Doraville GA) does not have a fire department.

I hope they weren't injured. No FD sounds like a now-desolate area, de-investment in rural USA. Some ghost towns in PA still have a FD.:smoke:
A friend of mine had his AT oil overheat and car-becue his 3 YO truck, trailer and boat in rural western PA, descending a long grade. He and buds got out, GM wrote a check (ins?), we cheered. The "yinzer" later went shopping for a new Ram, despite our cautions. :sigh: |
Looks like the firewall did its job.
Some cars use wire insulation that rodents like to eat, then the cars either catch fire or become inoperable. If your injector seals leak or oil leaks onto the exhaust that can cause a fire too. Regardless of the age of your car having an extinguisher isn't a bad idea.... Except for EVs/hybrids... Lithium batteries provide their own oxygen source so they can't really be extinguished...drive a burning EV into a lake and it'll keep burning underwater! |

Excessive Oil Consumption on newer cars, and longer oil change intervals, and the all too common poor quality on newer cars is most likely what helped with this fire.... From G The 2011 Volvo XC90, particularly with the 3.2L engine, is known for high oil consumption due to faulty piston rings, which can cause severe engine damage or, in rare cases, spark combustion issues. Consumed oil fouls spark plugs and damages catalytic converters. Immediate repairs are recommended to prevent engine failure. Oil Consumption and Fire Risks (2011 XC90) Engine Issues: 2011–2014 models with the 3.2L engine (and some T6 engines) are commonly associated with excessive oil burning, often blamed on faulty piston ring designs that fail to drain oil properly, allowing it to burn in the combustion chamber. Safety/Fire Risk: While often causing performance loss, extreme oil consumption and accumulation in the combustion chamber can lead to carbon buildup, overheating, and potential fire risks. Both G and YT are full of engines exploding from people going 10K and even 20K miles between oil changes. Ever seen the "just rolled in" channel on YT? Unbelievable.... .. |

Talk about problems with modern cars, did you hear about the Chevrolet Cobalt? Seems the ignition switch could move to accessory by itself causing immediate shutdown, even if you were on the freeway. 124 deaths and 200 injuries.
I heard the Kia models have a problem with rodents eating the soy-based wiring. My 94 Ranger has used oil since it was brand new! BUT, it never smoked and I saw no leaks. It was burning it up in the catalytic converter. I had to wash out the converter every so often and if that didn't work have to buy a new one! One time I paid these crooked Mexicans at an emissions center to "push it thru." Commercial vehicles here (GA.) are required to carry a fire extinguisher. Probably not a bad idea for private vehicles to carry one too. Not only does Doraville not have a fire department, many areas don't have sidewalks. |

Mercedes in the late 90's had wire problems because they used some naturally degrading material and their wires were shorting out - I think they were replacing wire harnesses at big $$$ Losses. If you poke around on the internet you will find lots of late model cars that are not expected to live as long as late 80's to late 90's models.... Nice Sidewalk.... Reminds me of when I lived in in Atl. Bike Riding was always on narrow dirt paths like that along the road-side. You don't dare ride on the roads down there. There are sidewalks on the other side of the road... Odd, Also strange I did not notice before, but there are mailboxes on both sides of that road you posted, here in NY they only have mail boxes on one side..... Anyway thanks for the memory refresh I kinda miss that kind of riding..... . |
