Help with a 1982 RCA XL-100 GGR659SR?
 

I recently obtained a 1982 RCA XL-100, I think it's a 25" model. I don't really know anything about how these things work. It primarily functions well but it has an odd issue that results in a horizontal displacement that I think is being caused by images with high contrast. Do any of you have insight into what is happening here?

Here is a video clip of the issue happening with signal through the coaxial from a VCR and a Super Famicom hooked up to it.

Here is another clip with the signal through the VHF screws coming from my home VHF broadcast.

I've noticed that white text on a black background seems to displace quite often. Though when the image fades or cross dissolves the displacement tapers off, making me think this is a conditional issue.

I have a slowed video clip to show an example of this. At the beginning and end of the clip you can see the displacement fade in and out.

Is there a simple fix for this issue?

Does the sound buzz when this happens? (Can't hear any audio on your posted videos.)

Does this set have an AGC adjustment? I think I would try that first.

Ditto on AGC. there is a layout chart inside that will show it. Also on
your next post give the chassis number. Format is CTC-###-? its inside.
While the back is off turn the volume down & listen for any strange noises.
Has the look of a HV transformer breaking down.
Start there for now, got a few other ideas.

The diagram says CTC-117/118/120

I looked through the list on the diagram and did not find an automatic gain control? Is that what AGC stands for? I have much to learn still.

No audio issues when the displacement happens. I put my ear inside of it and heard a high-pitched noise possibly coming from T402 on the diagram?

this is a thought, but its pulled in just a tad on the right and the interference at the top. I remember the b+ cap goes bad. sub out the cap its the big silver can i think it had two sides. try that it looks kind of like a b+ problem.

i agree with zeno transformer break down or low b+. Tuners did go bad on those back in the day.

Worthy of trying. Never saw the can go weak, just open.. Always had
the classic christmas tree effect. On cans with 2 the other was for the 200V
source. That gave the classic jail bars etc.

wasn't it if it pulls in on the right its power supply or b+. if it pulls in to left the damper. it could transformer brake down. low b+ and the tuner and control module gave trouble.

I just saw the video of the problem your TV has, and yes, I did see the fadeout at the end (0:32-0:34). However, I also noticed that one word on the screen in that video (the word "star" in "Star Market") has just one letter (the letter R) backwards, with the rest of the letters in the correct position. Was that backwards "R" being caused by the same problem the TV had (the fadeout at 0:32-:34), or was the reversed letter intentionally put in when the commercial was filmed or recorded? If it was the latter, I would be surprised, as I have never seen a TV commercial in my life with reversed letters, until I saw this one. That is, TV commercials can and often do use very unusual effects to sell whatever product they are selling, but if the reversed letter in this one was put in on purpose, well . . .
