How to find info on a Sears VCR
 

I picked up a Sears "top loader" VCR, in quite nice condition for its age, but due to Sears' byzantine model numbering system I have no idea when it was made, who made it, or how to find a service manual for it. The model number given on the machine is "934. 53131350" which I can't imagine will give me much of a result if I try and Google for it, is there some way I can decode this to get actually useful info?

The first set of numbers before the decimal point is the manufacturer code. "934" corresponds to Hitachi. Hope that helps you narrow it down.

Funny how Hitachi made everything for Sears and RCA at one point! My RCA CMR-300 VHS camcorder was made by Hitachi too, and the same camera was sold by Sears.

I guess I can start with looking for Hitachi service manuals then and narrow down to top-loaders from there.

EDIT: My Sears VHS seems to be very similar to (but not identical to) the Hitachi VT-11A, so that's a good start. Here's the VT-11A, via an eBay auction:

The buttons on the front are in different places and mine has front RCA jacks and no twin-lead connections on the back, but everything behind the front panel is the same. So that must mean that my Sears VCR is a successor/companion to the Hitachi VT-11A.

Yes, both the Sears and GE top-loaders were made by Hitachi. The GE top-loaders were all 1982 and older, and used the older mechanism chassis before MBK-14 came out in 1983, listed on Studio Sound Electronics website.

1982 seems like a pretty solid guess on when this thing was made, yeah. My last top-loader was a beat up 1984 Panasonic that I couldn't save, I'm hoping this one I can actually salvage.

I replaced the belts in this unit tonight and it will now fast forward and rewind but it will not play. It tries to play but the tape somehow slips after a few seconds and the unit stops turning the tape, rewinds to remove the slack, and then just sits there. I don't know what's wrong at this point, I've never seen a VCR do this before.

EDIT: right after I hit "Submit" I tried again and it started playing the tape just fine. Okay then!

EDIT 2: After playing a tape for a few minutes I've completely lost my picture, but still have audio. I tried another tape and I've got the same problem.

EDIT 3: Got the video back with a vigorous head cleaning. Guess the heads were dirtier than I thought...

I recall one of those top-loader GE-Hitachis had a VIR Stripper circuit added to remove the VIR in the video for their companion GE TVs because the tape wow and flutter speed and phase variations played havoc on the VIR in the TV a feature GE had. So they just killed it at the source. Interestingly that also removed the Macrovision copyguard stuff in the vertical interval and made tapes played on one of those GE-Hitachis recordable on other VCRs. Only the GE version had it.
