is there anywhere i can have a crt rebuilt
 

my cousin has a PHILCO Predicta pedestal that I'm repairing, I've recapped almost the entire tv but when i tested it a couple days ago the CRT filament popped like a light bulb. I'm wondering, is there any place i can get it rebuilt or do i have to find another one

Well...if you tested it at 6 Volts that is WHY it "popped".. Those predicta sets--(I THINK even the COLD Ones) use 2.3-2.7 volt filament CRT'S!!

So were you testing the CRT with a tube tester, or did it pop when you powered up the chassis?

If it was with a tester then you probably did have it set to the wrong voltage, if it was plugged into the chassis then you have a short in the heater string somewhere putting way too much voltage on the CRT, you definitely want to fix that before you plug another tube into it.

As for your original question, no, there is no one rebuilding CRT's at the moment.
The Early television Foundation is working on that but I don't know when it will happen.

A 17inch or 21 Inch tube? I DO have a good 17" predicta tube available..

He mentioned pedestal, so it has to be a 21".....

I guess I don't know predicta's that well..

They NEVER have been my favorite set--not even the cold ones.

Scotty at Hawkeye was rebuilding them with 6V filaments. But that was some time ago. They required some modification to the chassis.

I was with Radiotvnut testing a 21" Predicta tube years ago (in a 4240 raped by scrappers.) The chassis had a sticker indicating it had been converted to 6.3 volts. Well, the damn neck lit up like a hi-beam before I threw the voltage control down. Didn't burn out the filament but have always started on 2 volts testing those tubes since then.

I am going to put my 17" predicta tube and chassis on the ETF auction this week..along with a good(testing)7J{4 and 12LP4..
