whats the shaft rod i need called?
 

So do you see how the potentiometer is round with one side ground off? I want to mount some knobs on a project (just for display, not connected to anything). They take that kind of shaft for them.

Do they sell 1/8" rod like this?

Or maybe some tiny cheap potentiometer with long shafts would work.

Any ideas?

Could always get round shaft that diameter and grind/file a flat spot into the end.

I assume you need a knob to fit it.
Depends how long you need & if its US or Jap made.
Some 1960's Zeniths used fairly long knobs ( apx 2-4" )
that had a split shaft & wrapped with a spring that
you could put on many sized shafts.

In the good old days we had knob boxes. If someone came
in looking for a knob we would hand them the box & tell them to
take a few free. On top of that we also had 30-50 common
new knobs in stock. The knob box was more popular than the
tube tested especially on Saturdays. God I miss them days :yes:
I am sure many here have a knob box & can
help with a few knobs.

ive already got the knobs. Thats why i specified 1/8th inch.

Im sitting a BPC inside an empty 50s tv cabinet. The chassis and crt were shot, so i sat a modern tv inside it. I just need to mount the knobs back on the tv case, so it will look stock from the outside.

I think ill just find some aluminum rod and grind it to fit.

The pot you pictured, and most radio-TV knobs, are on 1/4" shafts, not 1/8". Take the knob to the hardware store. Look for long machine bolts with 1/4" shaft. You can cut the head and the threads off those and use the unthreaded portion: chuck in your vise and use a good new flat file to file the required flat for the knob. The store also may have plain 1/4" rod.

Shaft extender - that's what HH Smith, Keystone, and Clarostat called them back in the day.

I've robbed the Meccano erector sets for their 1/8" shafts to use on Oscopes - the diameter is perfect, and the shaft joiner/splice has two set screws.
