Exactly what I wanted, right at the curb
 

Spied an ad in the Craigslist free section for the exact type of set I was looking for. It was at the curb about 12 miles from me. The last time I saw an older color console it was gone within a half hour of the ad post. I high tailed it over and it was gone :(

This time, I decided, what the heck, and I was rewarded with this nice 1973 RCA GS704LX, CTC-58 chassis. Was pretty dirty, but cleaned up nicely. The picture tube was really weak and baking the filament did no good. Zapped the tube once and it came right up :)

I'd been wanting an older SS color console for a while as a daily driver (just to mix things up), and this one is just what I wanted :)

Ah, the "MA" chassis XL-100s, with the non-repairable MAD modules, looks like you have 3 good ones -they were just as reliable as the repairable ones. RCA got it right with their thin-film modules, unlike Zenith.

My dream set is a similar-XL chassis in the danish modern console cabinet with 2 speakers - one on each end. I had one as a teenager, but sold it to a guy with 7 kids (oldest was my age) - his mother-in-law had the same exact model and he loved it, and wanted mine. Oddly, his kids didn't watch much TV.

I havent seen local curb-action like that in 30+ years :sigh:- An XL-100 is ALWAYS a great find:D.

When I read, CTC58, it looked strange, but then I remembered CTC48,58,68. All about the same, three different years. My curb find, a CTC68. It was at an estate sale, marked $5.00, the last day, everything half price. I didn't feel like schlepping that heavy beast out of the basement.
Monday morning, there it was, on the roadside. :thmbsp:

Makes me wish I hadn't screwed up the RCA console I had. It was a delta gun set with a strong CRT.

pics have long since disappeared from here ...
... still one of my favorite sets , in fact it is my bedroom set , used it with a VCR to watch movies
I had to replace those dumb ass sliding pots that RCA used, thankfully Brian G had some NOS ones

I had an RCA set just like it, I still have some of the plug in modules, if you want them as spares. For postage.

Well for now, the one thing I need are the slider knobs, if anyone has them. Three out of the 4 are missing, and I have to use a pocket screwdriver to adjust them.

I've run it about 8 hours or so, and she's happy as a clam :)

Well, my buddy Ed came over to look at it, turns out the blue gun was still weak. We zapped it, and it came right back :)

Now, the bad news.

I must have at least 40 hours on this set since I got it. BigaudioAl was over this past weekend, and we were watching Rocky III on it. Then Rocky IV :D .

But just as Apollo Creed got killed, something snapped, and we lost video and audio.....brownish raster and just static in the sound. Shut it off, and it made a FLIPFLIPflipflip....flip.....flip sound. I remember hearing that same sound before, on an early 70s Admiral black and white. It had an instant on feature, and I cut the diode going to the switch to disable it. After that, it would make that same sound when it shut off. Only ever heard that sound once coming from a set, and that was then.

Somehow, that's making me think a diode somewhere let go. Ideas?

Well, looks like you got yer money's worth out of it.....
Is that a smaller - possibly portable chassis in a big cabinet....

The 17" chassis was completely different. A CTC72? Smaller power transformer and different horiz sweep output.
The chassis were physically the same size.
Those lousy slide control knobs always crumbled. IIRC, they were two different lengths, depending on the model.
Many sets, that had the tilt-out control panel, the picture would change drastically, when moved in and out. always, a PITA. :thumbsdn:

Check the solder connections on the transformers mounted on the PC board below the yoke and convergence plugs. Many a strange problem on these chassis is a cold solder joint

Given your clues, it may also be a capacitor section, possibly one on a lower supply voltage to the IF-Tuner

Looking for slider knobs. They were brittle and break if slider was not cleaned. We used Lube-a-trol' possiby same as DeOxit "fader lube"

It's a 25" set. We cleaned the snot out of all the controls, and it was working great. It was just a tiny little "click" noise and lost picture.

141494 are your slide knobs - sold them 4 to a pack. Moyers and Talon are out. I have a cousin's set with one broke knob, so we are in the same boat.

C104, a 3 or 4-section can goes with all sorts of problems on those XL's. The 30-volt supply feeds the MAK module (IF module) and it has to be clean. The 1500uF section in the 3-section usually goes - it's rated at 40V, we always swapped in a 2200@50V, hanging under the chassis. You'll need to isolate the 1500uf section, or swap out/stuff the whole can.

The XL - series had three different caps over the run of those chassis, all different in values. Send me the drawing number (9XXXXX-X) off the cap and I can cross it so you can check moyers for one.

I too have plenty of MA-series modules, lemme know if you need any to troubleshoot with. There is a substitution matrix, but you have mostly 001-suffixed modules, so I have the direct replacements.

The MAK was relatively reliable as a module - most got swapped because of a bad 30V supply, then the shops would swap the cap, fixing the set. Modules were non-returnable, so the customer ate a module. We had plenty of junkers, and never had to use a rebuilt module.

Be careful swapping modules - the blue/gray plastic socket housings are FRAGILE - and getting hard to find, like the slide knobs.
