Mexico DTV transision
 

Seems that the Mexican government is giving away DTV sets instead of decoders. Analog shutdown is late this year. So there will probably be a large amount of analog TV sets being thrown out in the coming year.

And this seems to be getting involved with a major election in Mexico, politicians handing out these TVs, in an implied vote buying...

That's not all. According to a piece in a recent edition of the TV Technology newsletter (published some time ago, before the one your post links to), all of ITU region 1 will, with no exceptions, transition to DTV very shortly, so it looks like the entire world will have digital television--no more analog--before we know it. Be prepared to hear of millions of existing analog televisions being junked or otherwise dispensed with, not unlike what happened after the US DTV transition almost a half dozen years ago.

I had not heard, until I read your post, of the Mexican government actually giving away ATSC TVs in preparation for that country's DTV switch. I guess that is their version of the US government's plan, which was issuing coupons for free DTV converter boxes.

Free flatscreens for Mexican citizens will probably ease the load at the US border... For a short while.

BTW, just as an update I'm still flatscreen-free but driving a Mexico-only vehicle. :nerd:

They should've kept it for the American market and mabey made a 4 door version to compete with Chevy and Ford...

Haven't seen any pirate TV stations yet. Probably because most people are on cable, and thus unlikely to find any over the air analog TV signals.

Zenith built a lot of tv's in Mexico in the 80s...probably quite a few still in service there

It has it's own wheelbase/frame. The pop-out windows were to address the no-ventilation complaints in the days of one, big fixed window.

As for why it never came here:

1) Would have competed against their own product, the Durango 4dr, which was just launching at the time. The market for 2dr SUVs (in the USA) was dead-as-a-doornail by then anyway.

2) Adding this model to their mix for US fuel economy averages certainly wouldn't have helped. Even low volume sales hurt your corporate average.

3) You save a lot of Pesos by not "certifying" a vehicle for sale in the US. Mexico/South America don't have such requirements.

15+ model years later and the Feds don't care anymore. Probably 25-30 have crossed the border by now and turn up in the US.

How does one get a Mexican market vehicle into the US, then title it and sell it in the US?

Is there such a thing as a Mexican vehicle title that carries weight in the US for transferring the title to a new American owner?
