1968 RCA BW Sportabout 19"
 

I got this neat-O classic off Craigslist along with a 1985 Colortrak 19" and a rolling stand that was from something else.
TV Tim has dibs on the Colortrak (works fine- its a CTC120!) and stand which sort-of fits it. :D

Its a KCS 160E model AJ-080 - "The Heralder". The tubes all tested OK except for the 5KE8. Only the 15KY8 appears to be a replacement.

But... heres what I got after a long and slow power-up. :sigh: The signal stages are not working either, sound is just sweep-noise and static.
The brightness is at 50 % but blooms it away if turned up, so HV is likely very low.

Im afraid its the yoke and I'll check it on my Sencore VA-48:smoke: but I figured Id post here in hopes of a better opinion:scratch2:

Could someone have twiddled that horiz hold coil so far off it won't run right?

Sorry IMHO yoke or vert out transformer 95% yoke.

Ditto on what Zeno says - classic shorted yoke, horizontal winding or one or both vertical windings. We used to see this quite often here in southeast Virginia - humidity in the summer would kill yokes. Our countermeasure was a good coat of Humiseal (kinda like spray polyurethane, but with acetate as the sealing agent). Lemme see if I have a yoke - KCS160 was a popular chassis, so finding one should be easy.

Wow havent seen one of those in years.... rescued one off a garage floor of an empty house in the early 80s, One H.OUT tube, and it was non responsive till i firmed up the yoke plug and it was a great set!! :)

Boobtubeman is right also... sometimes the connections are corroded after the set is off since longtime due to the humidity ...wouaaaa my bad english but i'm sur you'll understand what i write. :D

Yokes of that era used some kind of a nasty type cement, that humidity would cause it to eat though the enamel on the wire. I looked like black crumbly stuff.
Just about every yoke failure was caused by this and not just the RCA yokes. Other makes, as well. :sigh:

We had a 1970ish version of this set whan i was a kid, one (of many) failure(s) it had was a shorted Yoke.
Turned it on one day and it popped the fusible link.

They used Compactron tubes by that time.

Right you are! And rarely is it so obvious..check this out. Both one horizontal winding and one vertical winding are open, which explains the wacky symptoms.

Years ago, I scrapped many interesting sets including a slick 16" Emerson:tears: with yoke fails, because I knew the replacement would cost what the set was worth second hand - 40 years ago....:sigh:

Yokes went in a lot of B&W's. I remember well the glue turning to
black crap. Zeniths & Admirals went often & damn near every
Philco with no raster was the yoke.
Often if a yoke is shorted its easier to pull it off & run the set.
Usually it would brew up so no need to pull a tester.

I have a few NOS Yokes for 110 degree tubes, I'll look and see if I can come up with some numbers tonight.

Heck i was close....... Just the wrong end of the yoke :D

I have a NOS Triad YT103-1 that will sub for the one you need.

One thing I need is a chassis (decent condition) for a Pilot TV 37. Or Predicta knobs or trim parts.

Maybe we could do some trading?
