ID an Interesting cabinet at a local thrift
 

Last time I was at one of the thrifts I frequent there was a gutted TV cabinet (save for the 3 speakers). It looked to be early postwar, it had a mechanism where a box that looked to be the right size for a 16-20" CRT would rotate the CRT from facing up to facing forward. The cabinet was about as wide as a roundy color set, symmetrical with oval shaped speaker grilles on either side at the bottom.

There were no makers marks anywhere that I could easily reach, and I would like to know what it was.

Also it was only 15$ so if it is rare enough that someone would want a cabinet to repopulate I could buy it to pass it along to a caring home.

This Westinghouse maybe?

These make lousy Fishtanks, they make a mess when you retract it back inside the cabinet. :D

The Westinghouse seems to be it, but I just thought I'd mention that Emerson also made a "pop-up" TV console:

That Westinghouse is definitely it...If it had the guts in it I'd have probably bought it on the spot, and tried to get it in the trunk of my Lincoln...

In the '50s, RCA Victor made a TV with the same pop-up screen. It was a novel idea, but some owners said it was so much work to raise and lower the screen (it was not motorized), that they just left it in the upright (viewing) position.

If that Westy cabinet is in GOOD condition I would like to have it. I have one of these and the cabinet is not very nice. I havent' restored my Westy yet because the cabinet will be a lot of work. I have been waiting to see if I can find a better one with a nice cabinet so if this on is nice I definately want it.

IIRC it was decent (all there and no gouges), though the finish is worn and the grille cloth is wrong. I'll try and grab it if it is still there, and post some pictures...If you don't want it after seeing pictures I can return it with in a week.

Well I just got back, and it wasn't there. Last time I saw it was Friday night so I guess someone must have bought it since then...

Thanks for giving me the motivation to go there today, I found some good LPs and a 50's style pair of rabbit ears (which I think is a reproduction).

If I can't give a set a home I'm always happy to help it find one if I can.

Tom, I have the same Westy H216 Bob does and my cabinet is also shabby but restorable, thanks for posting this anyway.

They are cool sets, and I would have grabbed it the minute I saw it had the electronics still been inside it. Even with it being gutted there was a little voice in the back of my head telling me to grab it when I saw it...I wish I had heeded that voice.
