Favorite TV Show as a Kid
 

Most everybody on here had a TV around when they were a kid, so I thought it'd be fun to remember what your favorite show was when you were little. Or, even what was the first show you remember watching.

Mine was Emergency. I loved watching it every week parked in front of our big Motorola Quasar set. It was always exciting. I think that was about the first program that showed people dying, so you didn't always know that a situation would turn out good. I used to cling to the chair cushion watching it.

The first show I can remember was Green Acres. I still enjoy watching reruns and still say things like "plug that into the electrisicle."

The Phil Silvers Show, originally titled You'll Never Get Rich, is sitcom which ran on CBS from 1955 to 1959 for 142 episodes, plus a 1959 special. The series starred Phil Silvers as Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko of the United States Army.

My favorites were Beverly Hillbillies, Lost in Space, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, Bewitched, I love Lucy, Disneys World of Color, Family Affair, Dr. Welby, MD, and Emergency to name a few. I also couldn't wait until the next Saturday night when I was able to watch Dr. San Guinary's, Creature Feature movies.

These, minus the Creature Feature-Never watched that til I went off to college, in Richmond. There they had one w/this AWFUL local guy, Bill Bowman, AKA "The Bowman Body". His claim to fame was a re-write of the song that the Darlings sang on "Andy Griffith", "Dooley".

All of the above plus we had Chiller Theater, Honeymooners, Life of Riley, Burns and Allen Like them a lot, Benny Hill, Twilight Zone, Science Fiction Theater, That other twilight zone like show I can't think of the name... The Rockford Files Never missed it, Simon & Simon, also never missed it, Magnum PI, Adam 12, Dragnet, Car 12 where are you?, And I usually watched each station sign off at night.... Then turned the set off and watched the dot.....

Never missed Lost in Space, Loved it, got the collection on VHS.

I guess my favorite of all was The Dukes of Hazzard; I was also a big fan of Real People. I rarely watched dramas, though I did like Quincy. Discovered SNL when I was about 10 or 11 (early 80s) and that was a really big deal to me.

One of my earliest TV memories is a scene from Holmes & Yoyo (!) where Yoyo jumpstarts an elevator. Not sure why that ended up in my memory bank, but there it is!

The Outer Limits (1962-1965), One Step Beyond, The Twilight Zone, Survival!, The San Francisco Beat, Night Gallery.

When we were kids (me and my six brothers and sisters) used to love stuff like Gilligan's Island, The Invaders, Lost In Space, It's About Time, Outer Limits, I Love Lucy, Saturday morning cartoons of all types but especially The Road Runner Bugs Bunny Hour, pretty much anything that was on back then we watched.
Man From Uncle and Mission Impossible were big favorites of my youngest sister and I, we used to play spies after watching that.

The back was never on our set because it broke down so much, I used to like to look through the neck of the CRT and watch it from the back side of the screen.

The TV was located at the end of our 10 foot long dinner table my Dad had built to accommodate our huge family and we would all sit around it to watch.
Reception was terrible back then, (we were 120+ miles from Los Angeles) I remember my older brothers going outside to turn the antenna for the best signal, when you changed the channel they had to do it again. :D
One channel that was clear was UHF KBAK 29 from Bakersfield, they had a Tom Hatten like host who would play movies and have games with prizes for people who sent in their names. Every channel had a local host who did stuff like that back then, I miss the hokey little local stations with no Network affiliation.

I grew up in Hong Kong, but do very deffinately remember I Love Lucy, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley. I think I wasn't watching much "regularly" until I was maybe nine or ten. I'd stay up for the "Hamburger Hours" when a channel would switch to American programming and I'd see CHiPs, UFO, Space 1999 and some others.

Wow.....Night Gallery was so scary as a kid. I still think of a particular one where a guy gave this girl a little lapel pin that looked like a tiny mouse.....and it started growing. The end of the episode, the thing was big as a large dog and attacked her. I have ONLY seen that the one time when I was a lil kid....but I think of that ONE episode every time I hear of Night Gallery...or that theme music.

I'd be curious to find a YouTube of that episode....and watch it NOW. Always fun to see something that was so scary as a kid....and see how cheesy or trivial it looks now. That 1953 War of the Worlds movie had me absolutely terrified as a kid. The ships and the alien weren't so bad....but for some reason that camera thing with the RGB triad lens scared the HELL outa me :yikes:

I remember watching The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family on Friday nights on our 23" black and white Zenith.

Oh, "Night Gallery" had some DOOZIES. One, I recall, had to do w/this horrible insect that you put in a victim's ear & it ate its way thru his head..."The Earwig"...Another had a kid who predicted the future-And saw the Sun turning into a supernova...There was the one where a bunch of derelicts & drunks stumbled across a Doctor's bag from the year 2500 or so that mistakenly got sent back to the 20th century.. A guy who could fake death, & could only be brought back by a certain series of "Raps" on a wooden board..

A lot of you posters are a lot younger than me. A lot of those programs you watched, never interested me.
The programs mentioned, were on in the evening and I generally worked second shift.
Two of my real favorites were the Munsters and The Untouchables.
The episodes with Bruce Gordon, playing Frank Nitti were the best.

We never missed the Ed Sullivan show and in early '66 it went to color pretty much right after we got the ctc-16, also Gilligan and Batman.
