CRT coating
 

Hi all
I have a CRT, the coating has flaked off. So I removed the rest of the old coating. I cleaned the CRT with damp cloth, let dry for a week or so. Then I cleaned the CRT with a solvent. Then I masked. it off. Then I sprayed it with aquadag let it dry over night, it did not stick. You could brush it off with a brush. So I tried it again, same thing. Why? What am I doing wrong? :sigh:

What are you using - Aerodag or SlipPlate ?

Others have said you typically needed several coats (of SlipPlate), but I don't think the number of coats should affect how well it sticks.

What solvent was used to clean the jug?

That might be a clue to the non-stickage.

Hi all. Thanks for the replies.
Bob - I am using aerodag G made by Acheson.
Jr - I cleaned with damp rag, it was dry I used denatured alcohol solvent to clean the glass. It was several hours before I sprayed it.
I can take a paint brush and brush it after drying for 7 or 8 hours and it comes off like dust. Any ideas

OK, I thought that might be the case. When I used Aerodag G it didn't stick very well either, but not as bad as you describe. I can easily scrape it off with fingernail but it stays on if I rub it with a fingertip. I think its just finely powdered graphite suspended in a solvent with no real bonding agent.

I think I used lacquer thinner to clean the glass or maybe it was acetone. Make sure you shake it very well and try a thicker coat/multiple coats. I ended up using more than half a can on a 12LP4.

maybe apply it and then spray a clear coat on it ?

I would not spray a clear coat on it. The clear coat will insulate it and the grounding strap or contact or whatever is used to ground the outside of the CRT and will not make contact.

I have used this with good results

Use Aluminum spray paint for the external coating.

I've been using Slip Plate lately with good results. I'm pretty sure it's what Hawkeye was using when they rebuilt CRTs.

I'm not familiar with this product. Can you provide more info ?

I know this sounds silly but here goes:
I removed the second coat of Areodag G, all I had to do was brush it off with a paint brush. I started the third coat ( I was outside on the patio and the wind was blowing slightly) I noticed that the wet part of the spray was blowing away from the tube but enough wettness was hitting the tube to hold it on. So I took it to the garage and closed the door so the wind could not get to it. I sprayed it for the third time and what do you know it stuck fine I put it back in the TV and as I handled the tube none of it came off I can scratch it off but it will not rub off. So did the wind evaporate carrier in the sray and let the graphite barely stick to the tube? I don't know but it is o k now. I guess this could happen to all spray applications. I'M happy with it now.

Possible try for the future. Spray a primer / sealer first. Paint with enough ammonia will stick to anything. Then apply the coating on top like normal.
