ID For This TV / Stereo Console
 

I'm trying to determine if this would have a tube audio amp or not. With the sliding door on top it looks vaguely Magnavox-ish. Anyone know?

It's being described as 1950s black and white tv and stereo.

Granted i have limited knowledge, but i'm going with tube amp and magnavox.

Tell you one thing, looks more sixties than fifties, do not be surprised at all if the seller is off on the year. They usually are.

Early 60's, either Magnavox or Curtes Mathes.

I'd say early to mid '60's and I'm pretty sure it's not a Magnavox. Every Magnavox B&W console that I've seen, even into the mid '60's, had a seperate safety glass in front of the CRT. This one could be a CM or some other store brand. It does look old enough to have a tube audio amp; but, it's possible that it's a cheap series string hot chassis radio/amp.

I also appreciate the reminder that it could be series-strung, even if it does have tubes. I looked at a bunch of Curtis Mathes images and although I did not see one that looked like it the bezels around the CRT looked similar to this one.

If I get one I'd like it to have a decent tube amplifier, and I am more comfortable working on one that has tubes than a transistor unit. It's what I am more used to.

As RadioTVnut said, I've never seen a Magnavox B&W without safety glass, so I'll submit to Curtis Mathes, or perhaps a more mundane brand (Sears, Admiral, Bradford, etc). The bezel and cabinet could pass for Zenith, but I say not a Zenith because I don't see the aux dropdown door below the mask, and AFAIK all Zenith B&W sets had that at the time.

I also think it's a master & slave set. Meaning that it has a stereo-capable FM radio (and possibly a phono) under the door, and it came with an optional slave unit with the slave amp and phono (if phono isn't in the main unit on this one). That's why the TV is off-center in the cabinet, maybe.... And that screams ADMIRAL!

The Magnavox combos are nice; but, they are usually long and take four people to move. Years ago, I had an all tube early '60's Maggie B&W combo that used the big push-pull EL84 based audio amp; but, I ended up selling it to my neighbor and they have since moved off. So, who knows what happened to it. In more recent years, I had a smaller Maggie combo that only contained a record player in addition to the B&W TV. That one used a smaller single ended EL84 stereo amp; but, that set had been abused and had a very weak CRT; so, I parted it out.

The tube audio amps in Magnavox consoles are highly prized over in the tube audio forum of AudioKarma. I have one, they do sound good. :music:

I'm going to take a WAG and say Airline or Silvertone or some other PL set. Don't know why, just a hunch. Maybe CM but CM was known for making sets as big as Texas in these days so it would have to have been one of their smaller ones. I would not be suprised if it's a series string, single EL84 output, audio chassis.

Guy says it's a Motorola. Going to take a look.

Indeed, a Motorola Model 23SF11M-FMZ. Surprising none of guessed this brand, and the clue was in the picture in the ad, just too small to read:

It has tuners for TV, AM and FM

Three channel (tube :yes:) amp with a 10" Golden Voice speaker and two 5" satellites. Power tubes are 6GK6s, which is one I have not seen before in a Motorola. It is a repinned 6BQ5 I believe. Only two power tubes yet three OTs. I have seen this with the cheaper Motorola 3-channels, but both of my Moto consoles have separate power tubes for each of the three channels.

He says that the picture tube is dead. Is that something I could test on my PACO 640 tube tester?

Oh, yeah, has a pretty clean VM record changer, too.
