Why did they close this excellent facility?

Should be obvious: They were all a load of communist child abusers. The place had to be closed as part of the purges.

TVC was over 50 years old and no longer fit for purpose. The BBC is no longer a vertically integrated broadcaster, much of its programming is commissioned from other companies. Hence there is little need for such a large programme making factory with 8 major studios and countless other facilities. In its prime TVC was the home of a massive and possibly unique set of craft skills embracing all aspects of programme making. We can lament its loss but the skills base had already been largely dispersed.

I recently saw one of the few remaining studio engineers working at TVC. His main work at the moment is decomissioning the remaining technical facilities so that any useful kit can be redeployed at other sites.

A stark relic of the pre-Thatcher golden age of British Socialism
I imagine there was an employee whose sole function was to raise
& lower those tall lobby blinds everyday with a hook stick.

Present grim reality: Licence fees frozen @2010 level (political pressure)
(still won't prevent collapse of licence system as scofflaws multiply)

BBC attempts to find revenue abroad.
I avoid payTV but once checked out "BBC America" channel - excruciatingly boring.
