Hi. I have just looked at the schematic for that model, and almost certainly, the fault is caused by a high resistance switch on the front control panel Panel H. The switches form part of a voltage divider chain, and if a switch goes faulty, the wrong command is received.

I can send the schematic if required.

ok that would be great can you tell me what the switch looks like

The switches are the ones directly behind the plastic push buttons for FF REW STOP and so on. I would replace all of them. Thew are listed on the board as position number SW8101 through to SW8108

oh ok so you mean the micro switches. i did find where the mode switch was & i did clean it. it seems to work better now but the stop button still ejects the tape sometimes

Switches were fairly common problem on these early-90s Sharp VCRs, either they were dirty and not taken care of, or they were pressed down too hard by the previous owner.

Press the same button hard for more than 100 times non-stop usually fix the problem. Many times, keep pressing the same button repeatedly will often fix itself and increase its contact level.
