It's flat?
 

I was looking through classifieds for a console TV and found this.

It's old, but, it's a flat CRT? How long have flat CRT's been around then?

Odd that he says it's 17 inches? Seems like it would be even larger than 25" which most consoles like that were, wonder if he meant 27" and made a typo?.

I think Flat faced CRTS have been around since the late 80's but don't quote me on that, also few of them were that flat!
This looks very odd but if it's a conversion it's a very neat one.

The first impression I got was that the old TV had been removed and replaced with a flatscreen; but, it looks to still have the original TV.

And, that is probably a last gasp combo from the mid '80's. Years ago, I had a mid '80's upright Magnavox combo that had a similar stereo and it used the 25C5 TV chassis.

I'm gonna guess that they removed the old TV but left the control panel in place. Further, I think they measured 17" but not diagonally, maybe that is its height? It looks way too weird to be original.

So a 4x3 screen 17" high would be about 22" wide or about 27" diagonal, so my guess is that the screen is a flat 27" CRT. The color is a puzzle, because these sets (as well as flat panels) would have been tinted very dark to minimize reflections... the screen in the mystery set appears to be fairly light. :scratch2:

If it was converted it would have to be done with something like an early 4:3 Plasma, don't think they made one small enough to fit that opening.

That set has been modified. It originally was a 25" Star System (1980) with no flat glass; just bare convex standard tube. I'm very familiar with that set, as I worked for a Magnavox factory repair shop in the late 80s. It's a T995 chassis. Somebody either mounted a piece of dark plastic over the original screen, or it's been removed and a flat panel set installed. I suspect the dark plastic though, based on the original tuner control still being there.

If it has an early 4:3 Plasma mounted inside it might be worth getting for that.
