Burned yolk plug - 25" game monitor
 

I know there's a game forum...but since it rarely gets viewed and I have more of a technical question, hope you don't mind I ask here.

I have a Wells Gardner monitor chasis to rebuild..pulled from a Golden Tee golf game. It has no vetical..one solid line across the screen. Its designated as a "digital" monitor in the machine. Don't have chassis number handy...25" CRT.

So...my usual fix for these isn't the concern...I know why its got the line and whatnot. What I haven't seen before is a burned yolk plug. Has anyone ever seen this? Would it be indicative of a problem with the yolk and maybe repairing the thing would cause it to blow? Could it have burnt up as a result of the vert osc failing? Just one pair had a burn...the other pair was fine.

I've seen this happen a few times with TV's; but, it's usually the horizontal section that does this and it's usually due to bad solder connections at the PC board plug or a loose connection between the yoke plug and the PC board plug. When this happens, I clean up the mess and hardwire the yoke to the chassis.

Once, someone gave me a 20" TV/VCR combo that they took to a shop and they said it couldn't be fixed. It had a hole burnt in the PC board around one of the yoke plug pins. I checked the output components and found them to be good, cleaned up the mess, hardwired the yoke wires to the chassis, and the TV worked fine.

Yokes are higher-current, low impedance devices so a poor connection will heat up and fail quickly. Pincushion transformer connections on RCA XL-100 sets did this all the time without causing any other components to fail.
