Panasonic clock radio TV (mid-80s)
 

Hi all,

Anyone remember the clock radio/B&W TV that Panasonic made in the mid-80s? The clock used a green fluorescent display which was superimposed onto the TV image. I found an eBay demo video from last year which shows the model I remember, but it's not lit well and the auction is gone now. Anyone know the model number and/or have any pics?

Panasonic TRF-438P. Slick design and mirror tricks. The clock can be on/off. Sensitive AM/FM. 1/8" external antenna connector. Mine has some dust inside the mirror chamber and taking it apart to clean will wait for another day.

Beat me to it, Dave. Cute little buggers. One certainly could NOT accuse Panasonic in the '80s of not having enuf Product Selection, especially in somewhat "novelty" style TVs...

ya got that right, Sandy.... Pana was into obscure styles in the late 70s and 80s...from what i've seen!
The Quasar clamshell black and white tv's, the Panasonic flip-up tv, the flying saucer tv, the tv one that resembles a boatanchor WWII radio, the Quasar color with the little miniature tv as a remote control, the list goes on !

Yeah, & all the teeny-tiny 1.5" sets-B/W & color in a myriad of styles, some w/FM /AM, the "pop-up" sets-I'm STILL lookin' for the seemingly rare 3" version...If you could dream it up, Panasonic prolly made it back then...

Not to mention the "oddball" portable radio and tape units of the era... wonder if the engineers were smoking something? :D

haha, you're right, jr_. wonder if the design team was into " introspective-thinking " :)
It was pretty clever of them to introduce all the unique items back then IMO. People see these 'oddballs' and just HAVE TO buy em!
My personal favorite so far was the Quasar TP-2156YH 11" color tv from '84 - '86 because it had the most unique remote control as a miniature of the tv! I always mention that set because I love the idea.

I have 2 of the funky Quasar 3" color sets from '86 that are 2 piece-theCRT module & the "guts" module, connected by a sturdy handle...Crazy thing is, there's apparently NO WAY to attach an ext antenna-How BIZARRE izzat ? They HAVE an absolutely GORGEOUS pitchur-and by '86, the VCR revolution was well underway-Why Matshushita would have designed something w/such a SERIOUS design flaw is beyond me, but there it is...

My Word! those little "TV" remotes were cute!
