DuMont RA-112
 

Yet another new project.:)

I purchased this on Sunday from a Craigslist ad. DuMont RA-112 television. Cabinet is in fair condition, chassis looks undisturbed, no rear panel. This one will need to wait until I finish my RCA 9-PC-41 and my RCA CTC-16X.

Nice score :thmbsp: It looks like it's in good condition and all complete.

Nice set. I really like the round screen mask better than the later rectangular of the RA-113. Probably about the same chassis though.

Congratulations. I acquired the same set this year. It will be interesting to share restoration progress on these sets.

Unfortunately, I, too, like the round screen more than the rectangular one that I have on my RA-113.

I'm so glad that these wonderful DuMont sets are being rediscovered.

I had only seen one DuMont before I got mine, and understood that there was not a dealer in the Asheville NC area. Recently, I was told that the local RCA, Magnavox dealer, Dunham's, would special order them on request.

I've started working on mine, and now have good clear sound thru the tuner.

I believe the RA-112 and RA-113 are pretty similar. They are covered in the same Sams manual. This RA-113 article has some restoration notes that may be helpful:

Phil, I just finished reading your detailed article about the restoration of your DuMont. I will be using it when I get started on the paper capacitor replacements. I hope I dont upset anybody, but I'm installing the electrolytic capacitors under the chassis. There is lots of room under there!!

I saw your link to the high voltage capacitors, and will be ordering these soon.

I'm looking forward to seeing a picture on this beauty. I have Gone With The Wind, too, along with lots of other goodies

Yeah...nothing wrong with hanging electrolytics under the chassis. I restuff 'em myself.

Just go with higher voltage rated caps when you replace them.

As far as Electrolytics are concerned, go with the nice 105 deg centigrade rated Nichicon or Panasonic ones from Mouser Elecrtronics. Good stuff, cheaply priced, shipped immediately. What more could you want.

But, you knew that already...:smoke:

Unless I can prove they were from an on-shore plant, I NEVER use foreign-branded parts if humanly possible. I've been a tech for 30+ years and a hobbyist / tinkerer before that - and I like to see the same parts as original used in my restos when possible.

I have little choice at work, for example, I recently had a position where I worked with bills of materiel for first-article production, populating the boards and watching them power-up for the first time (I'm an Engineering Tech). My boss would sneer and growl at the very suggestion of most American brands (yes I know most are not produced on our shores either)! Remember, we don't thank Matsushita or Mitsubishi or Mitsumi for our freedom, and they don't get my bux unless it's the last gasp.

I promised not to get worked up for Christmas, but there are two generations out there nowadays who aren't likely to ever have employment in the electronics industry.
