Something we haven't discussed: TV carts & stands
 

Was thinking about this today. I think that in the future, and even now, the original TV stands will become more of a rarity than the TVs themselves.....

Here's a picture of one such stand of mine, I only have two. It's in my office with my RCA FU505W, which is I believe a CTC-68 chassis, and my RCA Selectavision VET-250 VCR. The VCR control door is packed in a box somewhere (one of the plastic nipples broke from age and use).

That's a really nice set, first time i have seen a table model CTC-68 that isn't a Lyceum TV.
I probably have about 10 TV stands which I have found at estate sales. Some are robust enough to set a fairly heavy set on but some are not quite so strong. None of them had the original sets on them when I bought them. I'll try and get some pictures of the ones I have. Most of them I have used to set phonographs and large table radios on.

I have a total of 5 stands/carts of varying ages.
Have a 70/80's vintage Gustdorf woodgrain pedestal stand. These seem to be fairly common.
Also have 2 of those 70's era carts with inverted u shaped flat brushed aluminum finished ends with the woodgrained masonite shelves. One is a small unit meant for 13"er sets, the other fits my 77 CCII set perfectly and is designed to handle its weight.
The 2 that are interesting are the wire carts. The black cart is a JFD and dates to the early 60's and currently holds a 79 xl100 13" set. The gold toned one came from an estate sale with the 1973 RCA AR181W b/w set. Both are in mint condition.

I really wish I could have found a home for the ones I had. There were maybe a half dozen NOS RCA from the late 60s/early 70s plus Magnavox, Sharp, Gustdorf, etc. I advertised them on here and elsewhere and even for free (cost of shipping) there was zero interest. I got rid of the whole stack :( If this upsets anybody, hey, why aren't you reading the classifieds on here? :)

I have a 1949 Hoffman with what I believe is the original stand.
Saw an ad for it and it looked like this one.

The only two original stands I have are for a Predicta Siesta and an RCA 630TS.

It took me longer than I expected to find a vintage stand for my Predicta Princess. Stands like this were everywhere when I was a kid, not so much now.

Just wondering, what did most people use the bottom shelf in the tv stands for back when the tvs were new? I figured vcrs were not available when those early mid 60s tvs were made so what did ppl put there?

Back in the mid 60's through the 70's we had a Truetone color table top set that came with a matching cart. I remember the bottom shelf being a catch all for magazines and newsprint ... TV Guide, Dad's ham radio mags, Mom's BH & G mags etc... only remember 1 other family that had portable set and stand and newsprint/mags was what occupied the bottom shelf ... the Oddessy and Atari consoles as well as vtr/vcr's came late enough that the were priveliged to occupy the botton shelf of those horrid rectangular particle board maserpieces that started appearing on the market at the same time ...

At the estate sale where I saved the RCA b/w set and stand were several of those wire racks made for holding LP and 45rpm records ... wish now that I would have snagged those also ...

During the later 60s and early 70's I worked for a Magnavox dealer as a gopher do it all handy kid. I had the fun job of assembling all the TV stands and carts for the tv's as they were sold.

Bob, love that red predicta! Most seem to be white.

That's a really good question. I assumed maybe record players while not in use, or maybe books or something?

NICE Hoffman! Just a hunch here, but if that's a 10" Hoffman, you might have a 12" stand. I've seen a blond one of the same cabinet, which had that same stand but was the same width. (not a criticism, as I'd be happy with any Hoffman door-type table model with any stand) :thmbsp:
