Am I in the right place?
 

I am wondering if anyone can tell me something about this unit : Goldstar VR 201. I have been looking for an 80s TV to put beside my large stereo system that I could wire into our satellite (TV needs to be on channel 73), and this was offered to me by a friend of mine. Does anyone know anything about it? Thank you

Sup, if you want to set the tv up on channel 73, there are soo many great uhf-capable tv's which you could use. and then use a vcr or 'rf modulator' to output analog audio via RCA jacks to your stereo.

What else can you tell me about it? I take that it it not UHF capable, or cable capable? Does it have a use at all?

If it's 80s and the uhf tuner works you can use 73.
I don't know this tv though. what tuners and inputs does it have?

If it's from the '80's, it will have UHF tuning. If it's "cable ready", it will have a switch to select between "cable" and "air". Cable channel 73 is different than off the air channel 73. If the set is not cable ready and the satellite receiver requires cable channel 73, you may have a problem. Does this set have two knobs for channel selection or does it use pushbuttons? Some of these sets had a 12 or 14 button tuner where the channel of your choice could be set for each button. If the satellite receiver requires cable channel 73 and your TV is not cable ready, you can use a cable ready VCR to receive the signal and then use the TV on channel 3. You can also run an RCA cable from the audio output jacks of the VCR to your stereo.

Not to rain on your parade; but, if you want a good '80's TV, you might want to find something besides a goldstar. Goldstar sets were of cheaper quality and they are known for flyback transformer failures and/or weak CRT's. Something like a Sony, RCA, Toshiba, etc. would probably be more reliable.

Pick up the TV anyway, if it's free. You need a collection like the rest of us. The best way to do it, is to get a stereo VCR and use the output jacks to feed the signal to the auxillary on the amplifier. BTW, lot of the newer sets won't tune above channel 69, OTA.

I was wondering when they changed it. I picked a freebee 1980 Zenith, that had a tuner that still tuned channel 83.

Is it a DISH Network receiver with secondary modulator output?

You can switch this between Cable channels and UHF channels by going into the Modulator setup menu (settings - Modulator setup). From there you can pick any channel (IIRC, above 50).
