What Brand of Set is this?
 

I saw a Craigslist ad (no affiliation) for a vintage color TV just outside of Detroit in Milan, Michigan. The photo was of a closed door cabinet which looked suspiciously like an earlier black and white set.

I called after it and was sent this photo. It looks to me like about a '51 vintage set with a 19" round CRT.

I think you nailed it. Actually, it looks like it could even be a 22" tube, but color it ain't. The controls look vaguely familiar, like Coronado sets of the time but I'm not putting money on that.

Pretty sure it's a Raytheon, Truetone or Airline set, built by Raytheon at least judging buy the panel layout.
I would say 1949, I think they had gone rectangular by 50/51

Eric the tube is huge. Let's compromise and say circa 1950.

Some of the '51 19" Emersons shown on this page from the TV History site look sorta close, but I admit, I am stumped!

The seller said that on the back is the number 902 and it had RCA written on it. It does not look like any RCA set I know and assume the rear label indicates that the design perhaps licenced from RCA?


The seller also indicated the name began with "M" but could give no details. He said there was no name on the front of the set!

Anyhow could it be Muntz? They had a 24" model I'm pretty sure, probably a 19" as well.

Looking again the brass plate between the knobs looks too wide to be a Raytheon built set, I'm really wondering if it's a Motorola? or Meck?

The brass cover looks like a Muntz. I found one as a kid, many years ago. In typical Muntz fashion, the control cover simply pulled-off to reveal secondary controls... It wasn't hinged. I hope the set gets saved.

The bezel does look a lot like the early Hoffman Colorcaster sets from 1955-56. If I was nearby, I would definitely go look at it.

I'm going out on a limb.... 24" Pacific Mercury? If not, my #2 guess is a Muntz (as per Carmine). I'm pretty confident on the 24" tube (as it had to be either 19 or 24). And stake my name on the fact that it's B&W, of course. Only way it's color is if it's a modern fakie retrofit.

There are 22" round sets out there. I don't know how rare they are compared to the 24s which don't turn up at all often.

Interesting! I have in my collection a round metal funnel 22" DuMont P-7 tube that was removed from some sort radar unit... I have always wondered if this size was used in TV sets.
