O Frabjuous Day ! Callooh, Callay !

My long-standing "Jones" for a leather-covered Zenith Porthole was well & finally served today by our own Harry Poster, when an EXTREMELY large box arrived from Noo Joisey. Inside was the Objet D'Lust...And possibly tomorrow, it will go to Knoxville to visit Dr. Dewick. I paid a little more than I would have holding out for on on You-Know-Where, but I also got one in 3-4 days from the time I ordered it, & it was packed to survive a trip to the moon. In short, I'm VERY happy, & would HIGHLY recommend him.

Talked to Terry, got it & my 1936 RCA ACR-136 radio loaded in the wife's Touareg, which is going to get its service at the VW dealer tomorrow, who happens to be on the same end of Knoxville as Terry...We're supposed to meet him around 10-10.30, then go to the dealer's, drop off the car, & then pick up my wife at the airport at 12.30, she's been up north visiting her folks...Busy day tomorrow ! But I gots me a Porthole ! I gots me a Porthole ! I'm BAAAD ! I'm BAAAD !! N'yah, N'yah, N'yah ! N'yah ! (grin)

Congrats.Welcome to the Porthole owner club...lol. I've only had mine 3 weeks and I never want to part with it.

The leather on mine looks pretty decent, needs a warm water/rag wipeoff, & then a couple coats of dark brown shoe polish...Or maybe neatsfoot oil...I'll have to experiment on the bottom of the case after I get it back...

Not to be a grinch, but I always assumed that was a leatherette (vinyl-coated fabric) covering.

For Zenith TransOceanic radios with leatherette covers, a standard treatment is to clean them and then apply liquid shoe dye (not polish). Some people go on to apply polish after that, but I think polish violates Nature (and what the factory produced). Leatherette should have a nice glow, but not a glassy shine like a flamenco dancer's boot.

In any case, congratulations on your find. The tabletop Zenith portholes are the only ones that catch my eye. All the others . . . too big.

Could be. Didn't really check it out TOO closely. Like I said, I'll "play" w/it on the bottom, & see what works best. But I agree w/you on the "glow" business...

My porthole works with the original caps(and 3 or 4 70's era replacements), so if yours is unrestored, it might not be a bad idea to start it slowly on a variac ya might just be pleasently supprised, I was.

Congratulations for getting a new toy!

Well, its down at Terry's now, along with the RCA ACR-136. I got back my working Sony 8-301 & a white Sharp 3L-Something-Or-Other, the one w/the killer "Jungle" IC thats "Unobtainium" any more. Oh, well..I have the Titty-Nipple Pink one, the white one & the black one, the pink & black one both work, I guess that's pretty good. But I can hardly wait to get my Porthole back !! I'm psyched !!

That set prolly uses the 12UP4? Did you test it yet?

Sandy G 06-26-2011 06:53 AM

Harry did; He said it tested "Good".
