Commodore 1701 monitor?
 

Anyone have experiences with a C64 1701 monitor?
I've got one that works partially- gives picture and sound on startup, then a few minutes after warming up, the picture disappears and I hear a "hissing" noise coming from the set somewhere. (NOT from the speaker).

I've got a service manual for the thing with various troubleshooting charts and such, but I figure I'd ask here first if anyone knows a good starting place to look for the problem. Nothing on the board is visibly burnt or broken/bad.

I used to have one of those. It had a nice picture.

I can't really help with the fixing, I just wanted to say it's worth fixing :)

Tell me about it... the fact they can take S-video makes 'em great little portables. Got three myself, this 1701 and 2 1702s. One of the 02s works fine, the other one sat in the rain, and I haven't had a chance to try powering it on yet. (Did open it at the time, didn't see any rust)

'Course, hence my nickname, I _do_ have two commodore 64s to match. :)

I was big into retro-computing too! I was more of a TRS-80 man, though. But a commodore monitor was much easier to come by than the coveted CM-8 CoCo monitor, and had a great picture. Here's the picture of my CoCo mess back when I sold it on ebay. This was only one table full, I had a bunch more too. I miss it sometimes, but I needed the money :)

I had an Atari 800 computer, disk drives and a ton of pirated SW. Sold it all to someone back about 15 years ago. The Atari computer could produce S-video and composite and audio, all on one 5 pin DIN connector.

I used a Commodore monitor as my 'daily driver' tv for several years, hooked up to a vcr. Great set. Toshiba built, IIRC? The guy I gave it to didn't appreciate it.

JVC, actually (and heavy as h*ell). Service manual lists both JVC and C= part numbers!

Since we're sharing pics, my C64 stuff is here, along with pix/details on two other vintage machines, a Toshiba T1100+, and a Dynalogic Hyperion (the Canuck answer to the Compaq "portable").
Got two more, but they're just plain 'ol 8088/86s (but one is a Commodore PC10) so nothing to see yet.

I had one. They do make a great picture. I gave it all to my nephew.

I still have a few other various Commodore monitors. The next one down the line that I had is the 1950. It has a fanatastic picture. It has a problem with the degaussing circuit now. Another that I have that works is out in the garage at the moment, I forget the number. My A3000 has been running since the first ones came out. I wish I could say that for my Windows machines.

I used to use my Commodore color monitor as a small TV with an external tuner box made for that purpose. I still have the box; it has mechanical/rotary tuners (VHF/UHF).

JVC, right!

This guy was looking for a cheap (read:free) way to videotape some speeches. I set him up with an old GE VHS camcorder with a bad deck and the Commodore as a monitor. All he needed was a VCR. Personally I thought it would make a very nice setup, for the price...he took it, but something tells me he just through it all in the trash the first chance he got!
