'80 19" Toshiba Blackstripe color TV

This is one that I had buried in the shop and dug it out today while cleaning out. When I put it to the side, it had a vertical deflection problem; but, it looked to have an otherwise nice picture. Anyone have any dealings with these? When I last worked on it, I replaced a few caps; but, there is probably a hidden one somewhere that I missed.

Ditto what Andy said above - green, red and orange 'lytics were famously the troublemakers in Toshiba and Sears sets. Make sure you get the 4.7uF at 160V and the little 2.2uF caps (C30X series caps, 50V IIRC) in the vertical, and if used, scrape off any yellow glue from the bottom of the board in the sweep area and CRT neck board. Other than that, mostly we saw bad solder connections on the flyback and around the power resistors.

That yellow glue was insidious.

Cheers,

I found a Blackstripe 19" just like this, with ultrasonic remote and a volume slider. It too was from 1980. Great picture. It was on the curb, with a sign tape to the screen 'Works!'

I wouldn't say that old Blackstripes never die, but in my mother's kitchen there is
a similar unit purchased new in March, 1977 (our first color TV), that has litterally
never needed service! There are some borderline caps in the power supply, it
will sometimes just go out unexpectedly, but can give months of reliable service
at a time. I trust it will see the NTSC shutdown this coming August. What will
happen to this set afterwards, I don't know...

Ah, I'm envious.

Wish I had a Blackstripe!
