I've always been curious about the picture quality on these large screen "bar sets". I remember seeing an ad for one claiming it could discern the four bases on a baseball diamond, which to me seems pretty pathetic. I also had an old fellow tell me about going into a bar circa 1949, and seeing one of these sets. He described the picture as barely viewable, even in the darkness of the bar.

Hmm. That makes it even harder to justify a road trip or paying for delivery. The only reason I would even consider it is that I've never seen a projection set anywhere near me.

I'm about a 2.5 hour's away. Considering it...

I thought that projection sets as late as the 80s or early 90s had sort of poor picture quality unless you were positioned in the sweet spot which was pretty much directly front and center; not too far away, nor too close for that matter. Up to a point in life I never knew that they did projection before direct view was pretty much the norm. I have never found a vintage projection set for sale locally, but I have always thought that they would be a royal pain in the but to get going properly.

Did some digging and this set uses a 3NP4 crt... and the anode runs at 23kv! The Sams date is 1/52. The alignment section talks alot about making sure electrical alignment is done before attempting the optical adjustments. And there are warnings about putting pressure on the focus assembly. This could be a nightmare if there have been alot of people poking around. But also could be a fun challenge...
