9" Sears B&W
 

Today, a lady gave me this pitiful looking Sanyo built Sears 9" B&W from '77. When I first fired it up, it had a dim raster that was shrunk in on the sides. The longer it stayed on, the worse it got. I found a 10 uf, 100V cap in the power supply that was red hot and about to explode. I also found another 10uf, 160V cap that was not in the best of shape. It now has a picture; but, the picture is still not very bright or sharp and the audio is not very loud. These conditions improve some as the set warms up; so, I suspect it has more bad caps. Also, I think this is another one of those TV's that was white when it was new; but, it's now yellow. I'm sure this was the cheapest TV that Sears sold in 1977.

I think it's funny how they always went through the trouble of putting the trade name on the crt label, but it was usually in this plain sort of typeset. Maybe somewhere there was a guy who believed that Sears, Roebuck & Co. operated a huge CRT plant in Taiwan.

Did you notice it seems to have a gap between U and 2? I have an early eighties
Taiwan built Electrohome with the same feature. I guess that results from using
a tuner mechanical assembly designed for some other market than North America.
Any other ideas?

I have a screaming orange 9" TUBE Panasonic from roughly the same era...Must be one of those "Last-Gasp" type sets, altho it still works well...
