Is that a UHF converter box on top of the set?

No, it's a VHF booster. It was really needed where we lived. We were in Sharpsville, PA across the border from Ohio. With a directional antenna and the booster we could pick up about 13 channels. Some were on the same channel, but a different direction. Pittsburgh and Cleveland were the furthest stations we could receive routinely.
