Hoffman 9teen - One ugly slimline.
6 Attachment(s)
Found this yesterday for a whopping dollar. I thought "what the hell, its another weird thing that should be rescued."
Then I tried to lift it.... This set is an all metal portable that is damn near 60 pounds! Pulling off the back reveals a metal, hand-wired chassis with power transformer. Yoke plugs in and chassis removal is easy. CRT tests like new and has a 20 second life test. Not bad! Looks like late 50s early 60s judging by the paper wax caps inside. No identification tags anywhere as far as a chassis number is concerned. =( Soon as I push some of the other roundie projects out of the way I may get into this one to see what kind of a picture it puts out. Looks promising. |
You're right, it don't favor much, as we say around here...And yes, it DID need saving...It MIGHT be the only example left, who knows ? An obese tube-based 19" B&W "portable" would likely have got tossed by '75 or so when it had its 1st ailment, in favor of an SS model, or likely a fancy color job...

Holy smokes, it even has a transformer...
|
Interesting set with a very creative chassis layout. I wonder if they had issues with the upside down tubes at the top of the chassis working loose and dropping out of their sockets after a few years?
|
I'd guess that's from around 1960 or so.

Solid..

I've always been impressed with the quality of Hoffman sets, that one looks very well built!

It's so ugly it's cute! I like it!!:D

An awful lot of design work went into that chassis, considering how few they must have sold. A keeper.

I like it! And you solved a 35-year mystery for me... When I was a kid, I got hold of a TV repair do-it-yourself book (Professional TV Repair Secrets by Art Margolis), and it had a picture of that chassis... All this time I had no clue what it was!
Glad you saved it, and if it comes up for sale, please keep me in mind (if others before me who posted, didn't already ask, that is). Charles |
360* of tubes! There sticking out from ever direction. Who cares what the front looks like, leave the back off and display the glowing action.
