Why does it have two remotes?

The one on the left looks newer

The one on the left is actually one of the oldest SC remotes and probably correct for this set.

I noticed the CRT has a cataract, you don't see that much on B&W tubes.

Looks more like the phosphor's almost completely blown away, ie., the neck was snapped off allowing violent inrush of air.:eek: Usually the inrush is slower, causing a smaller "hole" near the center of the screen. Bill(oc)

That is a cataract on that tube, some B/W tubes in Zenith's are bonded. I have two with cataracts but they're on parts chassis' so I'm not too worried about it.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that tube is broken- that set has an external glass.

Wish I had a nickel for every one of those I put a new CRT into over the years.

That set has the 21CXP4 tube that has different characteristics than the more common CRT's of that era. I was thinking that the yoke might be damaged as well. That neck really took a big hit. Wouldn't doubt it was a " curb setter" and the yoke was a victim of the " copper scrounger".

After taking a closer look I'd say you're right, the tube is broken.
You can see the Aluminizing through the screen.

Bummer, it'd probably be hard to find a new one.

nice looking old Zenith, very similar to the ~1963 model I have excepting mine is not a SC set

Yes....and if someone does grab the remotes...I'd be happy to buy the one like the remote in George Burns hand. I have this same Zenith SC 400, and don't have the correct remote for it. I've been looking and have never come across one..........Bob

I have one of these but with a boring cabinet. I had been wondering about the correct remote. The one I've kept with it looks older, but I don't know which model it really goes with. That crt might not be the toughest to find. Could be one of those that crosses to the fairly common 21CBP4.

If you look at tube characteristics you'll find that tube is one of the few that uses only 50 volts on G2. You probably could re-work the circuit to accomodate the higher voltage on the substitute tube. Why zenith did it, I don't know.

I would love to have that to stuff the chassis in my Zenith with a GREAT 24" tube. The chassis is probably about the same AND I would have a remote. I am not going to tell my Zenith story again, but I will say that I still haven't ever got it working OR found a good home for it. Seems like nobody wants a TV when you are trying to make some room. Perhaps it is meant to stay in my collection! My cabinet is more upright like most 50's sets with beautiful dark wood. I NEED to get it going if I can find the time and the problem.
