This really sucks. this was a tube set in working conditions... i find the sight of flames coming out of the burnt speaker frames to be distinctly disturbing...

I would have to admit I am guilty of destroying my share of sets. I usually cut them up and take them to the cabins for heat wood. Very few, if any all tube sets though.

They do put out a ton of toxic smoke. Its one thing to burn them in a wood burning stove thats vented outside, having a big gas tv fire in your back yard is just careless. All the toxic crap, lead, whatever and gas goes in the yard then when you go to sell they take a core sample and you end up with a super fund site.

You're not guilty. I've thrown out literally thousands of what we now would consider vintage or collectible TVs. Living in Los Angeles at the time, I had to "make them fit" in the trash cans. I never took pleasure in doing that, but I couldn't just let trash pile up either. I would receive maybe a dump truck load of old TVs; perhaps 50 or 75 sets. I'd have to go through and pick a few worthwhile, and I'd remove all usable parts & knobs from the rest, bust the neck off the tube for safety, and fit them into the dumpster.

There's a major difference between disposing of junk, and taking pleasure in watching or causing destruction; whether value is present or not. I compare it to swatting flies to eliminate indoor health hazards, vs. deliberately hurting or killing outdoor bugs which pose no nuisance. I never understood why (particularly teenage kids) get off on doing those things. I guess it's the inverse of the pleasure I get from pulling something out of the trash, and making it nice and useful again. Or maybe it's because I already know what a restored and working CT-100 or DuMont 30" Royal Sovereign looks like when on fire. I had the "pleasure" of seeing all that when my house burned down in 1988.
