NOS late '60's Sylvania 19" B&W
 

Here's a NOS 19" Sylvania late '60's tube type B&W that I got from the same place where I picked up the NOS Sylvania Exponent phonograph (see phonograph forum for details on that). When first powered up, it came up with a very bright, sharp picture. After a few minutes, the HV faded away to nothing; so, some troubleshooting is in order. I've included a picture of the chassis. You don't see too many that are this clean on the inside.

Wow, I had one of these (or a very very similar model) back in the 70's. A neighbor was tossing it, as it fell down a flight of stairs and the CRT blew up. So we gambled by buying a new CRT for it and it worked. Some years later something in the horizontal crapped out, and I saw it as unfixable so we tossed it. But as old hams even back then, we salvaged various parts.

Looks like you could almost play a tune on that anode lead...

A mid-'60s Silvertone b&w all-channel portable we had was also hurled down a flight of stairs in the early '70s by my then-stepmother, in a fit of anger. (The set had been in the master bedroom.) I found the TV at the foot of the stairs to the second floor of her house when I got home from school that afternoon. The CRT, to my surprise, was still intact. Even more surprising was that the TV itself still worked, and well. The set finally quit about six months later, but while it was working, it made a picture every bit as good as before the mishap.

Another great set, Bryan. I always liked the portables. And this one has the speaker mounted on top which is kind of unique.

I have a couple of 19 inch portable sets with speakers on the top.

The first is a 1965 Motorola which works fine. It is not NOS, but is in pretty good cosmetic shape.

The second is an Airline that could use a new 6X2 speaker, but works fine otherwise.

Sylvania wasn't the only TV maker to put the speaker above the CRT. In the early 1970s, I had a 12" Sharp b&w portable that had the speaker mounted above and to the left of the tube as well. Too bad that set only lasted three years. :no:

Not to mention the strain that short lead must have put on the 2nd anode connector. I wonder how many of these sets developed severe HV arcing problems when the anode connector was just hanging on by a thread. Unless the connector was exceedingly well soldered to the lead to the flyback, I can just about imagine these coming loose (or parting company altogether with the connector) after a year or two. Would it have added that much more to the cost of the set to put a slightly longer anode lead between the CRT and the fly, so that there would have been some slack in the wire? Sounds to me like a cost-cutting measure.

Why didn't they just mount the crt the other direction? Great find!
