Ugly Garod
 

Here's a Garod I haven't seen before, with just about the crudest factory cabinet of all time. Are those bare screw heads in the front panels?

I see "expander switch" in the manual. I suppose that's similar to Zenith or S-C porthole switches.

Looking at the Photofact (last Pix), it appears that the 6 lower holes are adjustments...focus, size... stuff like that... perhaps there were plugs in the holes?

Rare set, I expect it'll still go high though the pick up only might hurt it somewhat.

You can see the Sams photo better at the ETF site. Indeed, those appear to be adjustments behind holes in the front panel.

Actually I find that rather convenient. Adjusting things that affect the picture from the back of a TV is sometimes quite problematic, requiring a mirror. Here they had an original approach to solving that problem. If the holes were pretty small, as they appear to be, it might be a reasonable tradeoff between function and looks.

I don't have a Garod, but I think they have an unusual and interesting cabinet design.

Those Tele-zoom expander switches were mounted in Catalin!

That's a weird-looking set! It looks almost like radio out of a console unit with a scope tube on top of it. What's up with that speaker sitting up there like that? Looking at it as a whole, it reminds me of something they might have repainted into some kind of prop for a 50's sci-fi movie.

I have a Garod tube portable AM radio, and the cabinet construction/styling is somewhat similar.

That is an uncommon set and is definitely unique. I happen to like the styling of these sets but the mis-matched factory knobs are a bit strange. The adjusting access holes originally had removable plugs. There is also another slightly different shaped version of the Catalin Tele-Zoom control.

OK, I like the practicality of having those adjusters in front. That's still one clunky cabinet, though.

That thing is yougly! But IIRC, all Garod products were different looking.

The radio pictured above has almost a "Heathkit" look to the cabinet and panel. Not typical of a mass-produced product, where a bit more styling usually went into cabinet design.

I think it looks great!
