Single Gun Color CRT Indextron Video Projector Sony Vidimagic FP-62

Hi folks,

some weeks ago, I won an Indextron video projector, the Sony Vidimagic FP-62. I got a hint by Jerome Halphen for this auction, otherwise I hadn't recognized what it is, thank you very much. The projector is still working fine, but it is not comparable with the brightness of modern DLP video projectors. With some instructions by John Folsom jr, I could remove the housing of it and did some photos. The Indextron crt is a single-gun color crt without a shadow mask. On the photos of the crt, one can see the photocell at the side of the crt, which is registering the UV indexing signal from the back of the screen of the crt see [SONY_FP-62_06.jpg]. It seems that the crt has a focus coil, see [SONY_FP-62_08.jpg].

Dah-Yum, methinks you scored BIG-TIME....There can't be many of those beasties left out there...Good for you !

I have won the projector for 112.11 EUR = $138, which was pretty cheap for such a rare device.

Thanks for the pics. I have an FP-60 with Beta VCR built-in but I have never taken it apart. Someday I will get around to restoring it, the picture is very dim (much dimmer than yours) and the VCR needs belts.

Here are two more photos from the screen:

These are suppose to be used with a special aluminized curved screen that came with it, otherwise it is not very bright at all on a white wall or screen, we sold these in the 80's, 2 models one with a beta player and the other model with just video in and I thought a tuner built in, sony had high end viewfinders for their Broadcast cameras based off of this design, ( a very expensive option for outdoor shooting ), very cool to play with and of course if focus is not set correctly you will get only a green picture. have fun with it!!
:)

I'm assuming the aluminized screen is much like the early Sony Videoscope and the Advent Videobeam projectors?

Yes, but this was a portable screen about 45" only and came with a leather carry bag and small stand, designed for people on the road like Sales people, Reps..
These sets have poor contrast ratio right out of the box, and they always look like focus is off a tad, it's just it's design, the only problems i ever had to repair on these was the betamax player, the set itself never failed.

The Sony Videoscope screen, Advent screen and the Kodak Ektalite screen have a forward gain of 13! The screen material is the backside of aluminum foil.

Kind regards,
Eckhard

It means that if you view from directly in front of the screen, it is 13 times brighter than a flat painted white wall (diffuse or non-directional screen). But if you move off axis, it gets much dimmer than a non-directional screen.

I picked up one of these recently also. Unfortunately, the unit only powers on intermittently, where you can actually see the CRT 'on' through the front lens, and the front flip cover for the lens is missing. The aluminized screen is intact though.

Not certain if anyone knows how easily one can be rebuilt. Certainly a high-tech device for it's time (1984-1985)!
