A 1968 Sony Trinitron KV-7010UA! :ntwrthy:

I cant believe it, it was a garage TV used by an old mehanic. It's a little beat up. Missing the handle and bent up corners on the thin sheetmetal.

But, it works!

This is the one that says "TRINITRON COLOR" on the top and not "MICRO COLOR" and the UA must me late production.

The story is my buddy's friend lost his house and was selling everything off. Way out in the sticks of Placerville, this puppy was dirty. In the garage where all this stuff was being sold off were engine parts, flathead Ford complete engines, and VW parts, a 1966 Chevy Nova with a 383 stroker conversion, a 1982 Toyota 4x4 lifted, and some odd and end starters, heads and 55 Merc parts. Looks like he was planning to chop a top on the 55 Mercury sitting in the other garage.

Up in the rafters in that garage was this sony my bud Roger told me about. Dean was the one selling off everything. Roger said, hey come out here, I know you like TV's. So I did, and long and behold I opened the barn door and walked to the back of the garage and.... The first USA Trinitron..

There was also some really beat up Zenith stereo and a mid 80's 13" trinitron that he said that one's for sale for 200 as well. He can keep that one, dime a dozen.

So now Im wondering.. After seeing posts about how rare this set is I must ask... Is this set worth $150 bucks? I cant get Dean to budge.. I talked him down from 200.
What do you guys think?

Just sucks about the handle and the sheetmetal. The antenna is perfect although.. Kinda makes you think in a mechanic garage environment, the first thing to get broken would have been the antenna.. There sure is alot of greasy residue all over the VHF knob and power/volume knob..

Pics asap please!!!! I'm envious, but very happy you got it! Does it have all the aluminum trim? Mine was missing most of it, as it had come loose evidently and got bent and busted off. Missing all the knobs too, and was all beat up (lying outdoors in the desert for a few years). If yours has the trim, and the knobs (unique to that TV), I'd say try to restore. I know a place that will restore damaged or scratched aluminum trim, and the leatherette can be replaced if it's bad.

Mind the handle, it will NOT support the set's weight by itself, always support from underneath. Euro KV-1220 & 1310 had the same problem.

IMHO, US $150.00 is cheap for this rare model.

Very nice set you have and the raster looks good! I hope that the CRT in this set is ok. I have yet been able to pick it up from the gentleman selling it, as I have not seen it powered up in person.

BTW, I was not aware that the european KV-1300 series had a carry handle. I know that my KV-1220U has 2 plastic handles encased in the wooden structure. I have to go look at my KV-1200. I dont recall a carry handle on that set either. Very interesting.

The dangerous handles are the fixed ones with cross piece attached to chrome brackets by a little screw at each end. Screws come out, and the cross piece will flex away from the brackets and fall out! That's true on the KV-5000/5100, and evidently on the KV-7010. The others with swing-away handles like your KV-1200 and the KV-9000, don't have that problem.

to confirm my remark about the absurd use of carrying handles on 50lb+ TVs, here are two pictures of the French KV-1220 DF which came to market in 1972.
It's a 819/625 set, VHF/UHF and SECAM-only color decoding.

They keep on going forever and any French TV collector worth his salt has one. My friends at the Paris flea market who often have one of them in stock, listen to hear the dreaded "craaak" when the silly buyer pays no attention to their warning "Do NOT carry it by the handle alone". The noise is usually the handle ripping out of the plywood and the CRT survives; amazing!

I hjave read alot about that KV-1220DF. That is 1972 and I assume at that stage the 3AT2 was eliminated? Or does it still use it? THe cabinet is very close to my KV-1220U I have.

Hi Shawn,

The KV-1220DF had the EHT vacuum tube rectifier. I don't think they ever went solid-state on this model.

Next model in line, the KV-1340DF was all solid-state, and close behind the KV-1812DF.

Much later, in the early 90s Sony market tested this KV-16WT1B, a small-screen 16:9 set PAL/SECAM. I don't think this model was ever produced for the US market. Note the strange triangular pointed rear of the chassis.
