Problem with my Sylvania TV
 

My brother tells me that this Sylvania set:

has developed a problem. Namely that the deflection has collapsed to a small image, like 3 inch by 3 inch. He also heard some popping noises. Obviously, this picture was taken when it was working well.

I haven't seen the set myself, as I'm in Seattle and he's in NJ. Anyone familiar with Sylvania sets of this vintage? I'd guess that something has failed in the power supply feeding the deflection.

A bad electrolytic cap in the power supply would be my first guess.

Yep, yoke is working if you have vaertical and horiz deflection still, but still could be yoke related my guess too. The popping sound sounds like a cap leaked it's life all over the board.

Id be looking at all the caps in the vicinity of the vertical output transistors on this one first thing.

Looks like I ought to pack a good variety of caps to take with me on my trip to NJ in July. I don't have a schematic, anyone have a schematic to this or similar Sylvania sets? Or guess what size caps to bring?

I can't find that model number listed in the Sam's index. If a chassis number can be found, that would probably help. If it's a GTE or very early NAP set, the chassis number will be something like E53 or E48, etc. The later NAP era Sylvania's had a chassis number something like 19C302, 19C401, etc. Usually, this information is on a paper sticker on the cabinet back.

I was looking on the online index and it wasn't listed. It must have been in the printed index, which I don't have anymore. I'll see if I have that sams.

e48 was a delta gun console.that might be a 19c chassis.very good set.recap in the power supply also there is a cap by the high voltage transformer that sizzles out on these sets.that is where my sylvania experience ends.reasonably sharp up to these sets.good performers and that crt is just killer!

Yeah, I remember a rectangular cap by the flyback that was used in the NAP era Sylvania "C" series chassis that would bust open, arc, burn, smoke, and stink.

Years ago, I think I had a "look alike" Sylvania that used an E5x chassis that looked similar to the older E4x sets with a flat modular chassis, except the E5x chassis did not have a power transformer and used an inline tube.

Thanks all. Hopefully it's just some caps to replace. But I won't have much time to fix it, and if I can't, my brother will want me to toss it. I'd hate to, but if it becomes a tough dog... I can't keep everything... :tears:
