'76 Sylvania space age 9" B&W portable
From SC came this '76 9" Sylvania B&W portable. It does work; but, has a vertical height issue and someone has already maxed the vertical size control. I'm sure it has a bad cap somewhere. However, the CRT looks strong and the set still has the battery box for a rechargeable battery. This TV and I came out in December, '76; so, I guess I'll keep this one.
I did peek inside and got reminded how cramped these models are on the inside. Over the years, I've had versions of this set with the Sylvania, Philco, and Philco-Ford names. The PF model was an orange one on a swivel base. I suspect these sets were originally a Philco-Ford design that was carried over when GTE bought the Philco name from Ford. It's when I find battery operated portables like this that I wish there was still analog broadcasting. As you know, it's a little hard to use these sets as true portables with the new digital signals. I guess I could somehow rig up a DTV converter inside the empty battery box. http://i538.photobucket.com/albums/f...ledyne0001.jpg http://i538.photobucket.com/albums/f...ledyne0002.jpg http://i538.photobucket.com/albums/f...ledyne0003.jpg |
I once had a TV made the same month/year I was born - but it was a big and very heavy Quasar console that must have weighed 200 pounds. I'd have to look, but someone on Youtube posted a video of that same exact model. I put mine on the curb in '99 when I left Fargo.
