The A version has a gray filter glass faceplate. The other has clear glass.

I believe that the A also indicates aluminized; a coating of aluminum over the phosphor, which increases brightness.

The 10BP4C and 10BP4D would be aluminized, not the 10BP4A. At least according to the datasheets I've looked at.

According to the GE tube manual:

10BP4 = clear faceplate, not aluminized
10BP4A = grey faceplate, not aluminized
10BP4C = clear faceplate, aluminized
10BP4D = grey faceplate, aluminized

They have no listing for a 10BP4B.
