Faulty Scan on a FD-210 Watchman
 

Good day Gentlemen,

I observe the following raster distortion on a Sony FD-210BE Watchman, the Euro version of the first model made.

Received today and not opened yet, could you please give me some advice in finding the culprit. It may be as easy as a dead cap, but good RF sensitivity and undistorted audio would point towards "most of them are good".

What i'm afraid of, is a shorted deflection coil and if the case, how to obtain a spare. Were scan coil sets more or less similar across the Watchman family?

If anyone has the US model FD-210 Service Manual in paper, Scans, or whatever form, i will gladly purchase it (PM please).

Looks an awful lot like a cap gone south, Jerome. Another thing, I don't think these Bad Boys were ever sposed to have "lived" as long as they have...I remember thinking, "How cheesy !" when I got my 1st one back in '85 or so...

I hope it's not the yoke. If it were a standard CRT, I'd blame the yoke first since the raster is curved and collapsed. But the good news is that I do see those on eBay fairly often. Last one in working order with no box, went for under $30. I hope it's a cap, and being the lollipop tube, I don't know how a bad yoke vs. a leaky cap would look on the screen.

No, there were several different tubes, each having it's own distinct yoke. The good news is that the first version of the tube with the flat phosphor surface (rather than curved) uses electrostatic deflection for one axis, so the problem may be as simple as a poor connection between the edge connector and the tube. Be careful, that bright white line will burn the phopsphors in a matter of minutes, after that, you're on the market for a new tube.

Thanks! to all who replied with useful suggestions.

I purchased a Service Manual in the UK, received it & got to work.

Disassembly is hellish and always in anguish of breaking something.

Turns out the capacitors are OK, this TV was dropped, not by the Post Office as it was very well packed, but before.

The molded ferrite magnets which are part of the Vertical scan coils were severely shattered, hence the V-scan all over the place.

Have tried SuperGlue rebuild, not dry yet. Best case: V Scan looks OK, worst case: i buy a dead US FD-210 to scrounge a scan coil/CRT assembly.

If anybody reading this thread has a brain-dead FD-210 or a genuine Sony Scan Coil assy for this model they want to sell, please drop me a PM.

I will photograph the screen with the ferrites reglued when ready,

Ok, I am confused here, I was under the impression that the the vertical deflection was electostatic. I don't have a service manual, so whatever yours says must be the case.
