Interesting item... if you happen to have a Motorola with a bad 23EGP22 tube and you happen to have a good 25ZP22 laying around. Dont think I've heard of a 25ZP22 before.

That would have been good to have back around '90-'91 when I had that big beige steel cabinet Moto table model color TV. The only thing wrong with it was a real weak w/ cataracts 23EGP22 CRT. Never found a suitable tube and ended up junking the TV.

I checked the sub book-not sure what makes the "z" special, but it is interchangeable with all the typical 23v tubes. (25AP22, 25XP22, etc) Somebody should definately grab this. I know someone on here has got to have a need for it.

I converted a Magnavox the same way with one of those kits..

I have the manual for one of these kits. I looked it over once and noticed alot of hacking had to go into effect to make the conversion. If Im not mistaken, the contour of the 23EGP22 face is different than that of a 25GP22, also the metal sheild that goes behind the CRT has a cutout for the anode lead on the side, not the top as typical on all other CRTs. Per that manual, you had to change all these parts (included in the kit such as brackets, new HV lead) but motorola mentions that the technician will need to cut the metal sheild with tin snips so the HV anode can be accessable. Also, motorola suggested using a soldering iron as a "hot knife" to cut the new arc into the plastic CRT bezel so that the CRT would fit properly under the bezel. Templates are givin to make this happen. Still, it would bother me to know so much modifications had to be done to accept this new CRT. The soldering iron hot knife concept didn't impress me to say the least.

I didn't say it was pretty...That Maggie took some hacking too and once you're into it there's no turning back! I did this back in the seventies and the jobber proclaimed he sold lots of those kits (imagine that). And this was before I knew any better. 23EGP's had a bad reputation then too. I could be wrong but I seem to remember that there were just no replacements out there or rebuildables as they were avoided. (I bet Scotty would know!)
I wasn't too happy about that job either when it was all said and done.

It's my experience that converting a Motorola that was originally equipped with a 23EG, that a 25A/25XP22 may be installed with very minor mechanical modifications (hardware, etc.) and without a conversion kit. I did this to my own Motorola in a Drexel cabinet back in the 1970s.
There were no issues with whatever differences there might be with each tube's faceplate profile.

I was the one that bought that conversion kit on e-**y at that time. They show a real nasty proceedure in the book that came with the kit. It involved cutting away at the front bezel. It's on my to-do list.

so i have the only good one left now?you tossed yours.i was beginning to think a good 15gp22 was more common.i get to restore a early motorola color set here soon.want to try and use a 25a/23v in it but at least i was able to get a channel master lifetime rebuilt 23eg at hamvention.found it sunday for $15!
set is owned by an old school farming family who bought it new.and sacrificed quite a bit to be able to own it.i have been in it 4 times in the 30 years i have known them.

Very true! I have both a spare 23EGP22 and a 25XP22. Very noticable curves and countours of the face of the CRT.

Ps.. If anyone is interested in a perfect 23EGP22 let me know.
