Anyone good with vintage RCA VCRs?

In another thread I had a bad gear that kept the tape guides from wrapping the tape around the video head. Well that gear has been fixed, but in the process I must have messed something else up.

The unit has been put back together and the gear will now move the tape pullers, but that's about the extent of what it will do. It will no longer go into play mode, rw, ff and the eject button won't even budge. I'm wondering if a sensor or something is out of whack as I didn't touch any of the buttons or their linkages to fix the gear. I've check for disconnected connections, etc....

I know the eject button locks while the unit is in the play or ff/rw mode, so maybe it thinks it's in one of those modes. Also, when I press ff, the ff wheel doesn't move itself far enough to press against the hub.

I really don't want to have a 40lbs+ paper weight, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
