Victor Radio R-52 pre RCA?

Hey whats up everyone!

Theres hardely any information or pictures on the web for my R-52 radio! Victor Talking Machine Division. Victor Radio R-52. 4 RF stages an antenna coupling stage(226), detector(227), AF amp(226), Push pull 45's and an 80 rect. Its a TRF set and no AGC. Are they really rare radios? I paid 180 for mine and 5 bucks for new filter caps and it works Ok exept for the volume control!

Thats why I am posting, so I can get some help. The volume control isn't working right. It contains two pots of the same resistance 3800 ohms. They work in opposite resistances though. One starts out at max resistance and the other part in the circuit has 0.
The first 1/8th turn of the pot connected to the antenna is open and causes no signal to the radio. Once you turn past that point the radio comes in is quite loud.
The second pot must be open, because I couldn't get any accurate resistance readings. I have to use a 5 inch antenna during the day an none at night just so I don't blow my ears out. I tried a 10 foot antenna and wow. . . .

Can someone rebuild the control? I don't want to buy a junk chassis as I don't have any room plus I've never seen another radio of this type.
Got some pictures of the radio.

Thanks for any help.

Victor made lots of these radios with some variations in model numbers and cabinets but basically the same. They were built like tanks, as you know! For the odd volume control, try Playthings of the Past, search them on line.

I might be in luck with the oldradio parts website(Playthings of the Past). I have a very simple question, is 3800 ohms 3.8K? The part they have is listed at 4K and contains the same 10450 part number list in my Service manual.

Hope to hear back tommorow!

Thanks for your help,
Matt Davala

Here's a site with great breakdown of lots of pictures of the RE-45, radio basically the same as yours, but with added phono. Scroll down to the picture thumbnails.

These are great radios. The 1929 Victor R-32, R-52, RE-45, and RE-75 came out at the time RCA and Victor merged. The superhet sets were sold as RCA sets, and Victor already had these fine TRF sets in development and were sold under that name.

Though they are TRF sets, the ganged tuning condensers provide excellent tuning, and these sets have very good sound. No AVC of course, but they are very sensitive when aligned properly.

There were lots of them made so parts are around. In 1930 a similar family was marketed but I think they were RCA Victor labeled radios.

Liked your photos. You kitty knows where to go to survey the surroundings! Good luck in getting the pot you need, you will enjoy it when it is working properly.

If PTOP doesn't work out you can try Mark Oppat at [email protected]. He rebuilds controls and has many parts for them. He's in N. Ohio or MI somewhere.

Thanks! I tried him a year or so ago and I thought he said it couldn't be rebuilt. Seems straight foward though. I asked again anyhow. I really want this fixed.

Thanks!

Too bad. Well, he may have a replacement the right size, too, if the other one doesn't work out.

Try [email protected]. Based on my (admittedly old) correspondence this was a more recent address.

He has a problem with spam filters. Try his alternate email. If you don't get a reply from it, try a FAX.
